Motion Facts and Information

  1. Symptoms of motion sickness, seasickness or altitude sickness: Feeling cold and clammy

  2. Motion Eaze for motion sickness can help prevent the unpleasant symptoms of travel sickness.

  3. What causes Motion Sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Conflicting Messages, One message or signal comes from the middle (or inner) ear that controls balance and the other message comes from the eyes. During changes in position caused by travel these two signals conflict or disagree. Or seen another way, reading a book the view remains stable while the body is twisted and turned during travel. These two signals end up at the nausea center of the brain and with such confusion is it a surprise that motion sickness is the result.

  4. Symptoms of motion sickness, seasickness or altitude sickness: Feeling Giddy and Faint

  5. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; Focus your eyes on the horizon

  6. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Again, if possible, avoid the cabin and other enclosed spaces. Sometimes, a breezy spot in the sun may be preferable to a shady spot in a stuffy cabin.  The open air and ability to look out over the horizon are often more important than being in a shady spot, which can be stuffy and enclosed, limiting your view of the horizon and perhaps making you more prone to motion sickness.

  7. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Make sure you and your buddy have your gear prepared so that you can be ready to dive in as little time as possible once the boat anchors. When the boat is rolling with the waves rather than moving under its own power and you are standing on deck, possibly getting hot, especially if wearing a wet or dry suit, your resistance to motion sickness diminishes rapidly. Reduce that exposure time to an absolute minimum.

  8. Digestive herbs or homeopathic remedies may be helpful in preventing and relieving motion sickness. As with most therapies, alternative therapies for motion sickness are best used before the onset of symptoms.

  9. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Do not eat greasy or acidic foods for several hours before a dive. This includes having coffee before diving. You don't want to have a lot of acid or heavy, slow to digest foods rolling around in your stomach while you are rolling around on the sea. Heavy, greasy foods like bacon and eggs, sausage, waffles or pancakes with syrup, alone or combined with acidic juices like orange juice, can wreak havoc on your system and end up recycled as lunch for fishes. Consider less acidic fruits (apples, bananas, pears, grapes, melons, etc.), breads (muffins, croissants, rolls), cereals and grains as alternatives. Milk, water, apple juice, cranberry juice and other low acid beverages are gentler alternatives to orange juice or grapefruit juice.

  10. This is the main symptom of motion sickness and is caused by conflicting messages in the nausea center in the brain. Many who suffer from motion sickness get the first three or four of the symptoms listed here and it makes their trip miserable but not as bad as those who start to vomit.
