Motion Facts and Information

  1. Pilots often report that their family members and other passengers are far more prone to motion sickness than they are.

  2. Seasickness happens when the body, inner ear, and eyes all send different signals to the brain, resulting in confusion and queasiness. It is a problem generally attributed to disturbance in the balance system of the inner ear (vestibular) system. Your sensory perception gets out of synch as these nerve fibers attempt to compensate for the unfamiliar motion of the ship moving through water.

  3. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Do not drink alcoholic beverages for several hours before a dive. Alcohol tends to dehydrate the body. Its other symptoms are not desirable either when diving. Alcohol can prevent the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage of sleep, the one in which you dream and your brain rests. You may feel tired and un alert from just a few drinks, two qualities not conducive to safe diving. If you do plan on drinking, make every third drink a glass of water. It will reduce dehydration and your chances for a hangover.

  4. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: In the car: sit in the front seat or drive.

  5. Motion sickness or seasickness is usually just a minor annoyance and does not signify any serious medical illness, but some travelers are incapacitated by it, and a few even suffer symptoms for a few days after the trip.

  6. Motion sickness, seasickness and altitude sickness happen when signals from the balance system of your body conflict with visual cues. For example, your body may sense rolling motions that you cannot see from inside a ship's cabin. Conversely, during a "virtual reality" simulation, your eyes perceive movement that your body does not experience. In addition, the structures of your inner ears can become unbalanced.

  8. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Eat bland foods -- crackers and bread, or bananas rice, applesauce and toast.

  9. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Drink plenty of water. Even partial dehydration lowers your body's resistance to the stressful factors caused by diving and the boat ride. Take lots of water with you and drink often.

  10. There are essentially three strategies to treatment of motion sickness: Behavioral (avoidance, mental activities), Medication (conventional, alternative), Stimulation (alternative)
