Motion Facts and Information

  1. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Make sure you and your buddy have your gear prepared so that you can be ready to dive in as little time as possible once the boat anchors. When the boat is rolling with the waves rather than moving under its own power and you are standing on deck, possibly getting hot, especially if wearing a wet or dry suit, your resistance to motion sickness diminishes rapidly. Reduce that exposure time to an absolute minimum.

  2. It is not known why some people develop motion sickness, seasickness or altitude sickness and others do not. Motion sickness is more likely to be seen in young people, women, and people of Asian ancestry. Those who are fearful and anxious during a trip, or who more frequently experience nausea or vomiting, may also be prone to motion sickness.

  3. Motion sickness is common and normal. Nearly anyone can be made motion sick by an appropriate stimulus, except for individuals with no vestibular system.

  4. Motion sickness produces a whole range of symptoms, of which nausea and vomiting are the most severe.

  5. Some divers as being very effective for sea sickness report eating peppermint in conjunction with ginger. Since mint does have some of the same calmative qualities as ginger, this may be true. Perhaps it is just the belief that it works that is effective. Regardless, it is an inexpensive and pleasant addition. An added benefit is making your breath sweeter.

  6. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: On the airplane: ask for a window seat. The front of the plane may be preferable, as it is usually less noisy.

  7. To relieve motion sickness or sea sickness on a boat, stay on deck and avoid going below deck while underway.

  8. Motion sickness causes reduced blood flow and this in turn reduces the body temperature making the sufferer feel cold and clammy.

  9. To relieve motion sickness or sea sickness keep children occupied. Have them count cars, boats, etc. or play games.

  10. Another treatment for sea sickness or motion sickness is an acupressure wrist band. It applies pressure to a particular point on your wrist, which can prevent the feeling of nausea.
