Motion Facts and Information

  1. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Once you are in the water, drop down below the surface (make sure your buddy knows that this is the plan). The top ten or fifteen feet or so (3 to 4.5 meters), more in rough seas can still have a surge that will have an effect on you. Dropping below that can have a calming effect on your senses (and your stomach).

  2. One tablet of trip ease should be taken at the start of each trip, and one every hour while the problem persists.

  3. It is not known why some people develop motion sickness, seasickness or altitude sickness and others do not. Motion sickness is more likely to be seen in young people, women, and people of Asian ancestry. Those who are fearful and anxious during a trip, or who more frequently experience nausea or vomiting, may also be prone to motion sickness.

  4. To relieve motion sickness or sea sickness keep children occupied. Have them count cars, boats, etc. or play games.

  5. To relieve motion sickness or sea sickness always sit in the front of a vehicle and look out the front window only.

  6. To prevent motion sickness or sea sickness or altitude sickness: Take one of the varieties of motion sickness medicines before your travel begins, as recommended by your physician.

  7. Motion sickness is common and normal. Nearly anyone can be made motion sick by an appropriate stimulus, except for individuals with no vestibular system.

  8. Some divers as being very effective for sea sickness report eating peppermint in conjunction with ginger. Since mint does have some of the same calmative qualities as ginger, this may be true. Perhaps it is just the belief that it works that is effective. Regardless, it is an inexpensive and pleasant addition. An added benefit is making your breath sweeter.

  9. Each year more than two million people visit a doctor for dizziness, and an untold number suffer with motion sickness, which is the most common medical problem associated with travel.

  10. Motion sickness is also a learned malady, which can be unlearned. Roughly 17 percent of military pilot-trainees experience motion sickness serious enough to interfere with aircraft control, but only about 1 percent actually wash out due to air sickness. The rest simply learn to deal with it.
