Motion Facts and Information

  1. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: For cars: It may be helpful to mentally rehearse a trip route as familiarity and anticipation is sometimes helpful.

  3. Motion sickness is a conflict between your senses. A fluid filled canal in your inner ear that controls your sense of balance tells your brain that your body is moving, while your eyes, looking into the cabin of the boat, tells your brain that you are not moving. That conflict can cause your body to be out of balance, and we know how the digestive system feels about that.

What Causes Motion Sickness, Seasickness or Altitude Sickness: In order for the body to determine where it is at all times, the brain combines visual information, touch information, inner ear information, and internal expectations. Under most circumstances, the senses and expectations agree. When they disagree, there is conflict, and motion sickness can occur.

  7. Motion sickness causes reduced blood flow and this in turn reduces the body temperature making the sufferer feel cold and clammy.

  8. Motion Sickness is a syndrome that occurs in some people when they travel in a vehicle such as an automobile, airplane, or ship. Its symptoms include nausea, dizziness, vomiting, drowsiness, pallor, and sweating. Why some people experience motion sickness and others don't, is uncertain.

  9. To prevent motion sickness or sea sickness or altitude sickness: Do not watch or talk to another traveler who is having motion sickness.

  10. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Do not drink alcoholic beverages for several hours before a dive. Alcohol tends to dehydrate the body. Its other symptoms are not desirable either when diving. Alcohol can prevent the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage of sleep, the one in which you dream and your brain rests. You may feel tired and un alert from just a few drinks, two qualities not conducive to safe diving. If you do plan on drinking, make every third drink a glass of water. It will reduce dehydration and your chances for a hangover.
