Motion Facts and Information

  1. For motion sickness or sea sickness: While in the water, be careful not to swallow sea water. It makes many people nauseous. Make sure your mouthpiece fits well and that you have your regulator comfortably and securely in your mouth so as to keep water out.

  2. Motion Sickness is a syndrome that occurs in some people when they travel in a vehicle such as an automobile, airplane, or ship. Its symptoms include nausea, dizziness, vomiting, drowsiness, pallor, and sweating. Why some people experience motion sickness and others don't, is uncertain.

  3. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Caffeinated beverages (including soft drinks) should be avoided as they are diuretics (make you urinate), which accelerate dehydration. The gas in carbonated beverages has negative responses in some, avoid them also.

  4. Symptoms of motion sickness, seasickness or altitude sickness: Abnormal color of skin, especially the face. This loss of color is temporary and is caused by a reduced blood flow to the face and is similar to being in shock, being sick. Once the motion sickness ends the color returns to normal.

  5. Acupressure may reduce symptoms of sea sickness. Use "Sea Bands" as commercially available.

  6. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; Avoid strong odors

  7. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Face leeward (so if you vomit, it gets blown away from the ship, not into it).

  8. If you feel nauseous and about to succumb, please avoid the entry and exit areas of the boat. Hang your head over the gunwales and avoid "chumming" in areas other divers must use.

  9. For motion sickness or sea sickness: If you are beginning to feel a bit queasy, stand up and look out over the horizon. Despite what you might think, sitting or lying down is the worst thing you can do at this point. Don't do it. This is a critical moment. You will get much worse even faster and may reach a point of no return if you make the wrong choice. Soda crackers seem to help some people by calming their stomachs and reducing nausea.

  10. Natural ginger for motion or sea sickness. There is medical evidence that this does indeed help relieve N/V. How it works is also not known. Ginger extract can be found in most health food stores.
