Motion Facts and Information

  1. Different textbooks have different definitions, but basically motion sickness -- also called air sickness, sea sickness or car sickness -- is nausea and vomiting triggered by disturbance of the vestibular apparatus. The vestibular apparatus refers to the semicircular canals of the inner ear, which we use to maintain balance and sense orientation and movement.

  2. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Aboard a ship: stay toward the middle and look at the horizon. Avoid ship travel if possible. Stay out of small tight places where you can't see the horizon.

  3. Techniques to reduce motion sickness, seasickness, and altitude sickness: The Night before the trip, Lack of sleep, hangovers and upset stomachs are wrong way to start a trip and to avoid motion sickness. Therefore careful eating the 24 hours before the trip is wise and will help to reduce the chance of motion sickness. Therefore avoid a heavy and or fatty meal, one with lots of spices, chicken and fish or anything that is old or a little suspect, like takeaway foods late at night.

  4. Each year more than two million people visit a doctor for dizziness, and an untold number suffer with motion sickness, which is the most common medical problem associated with travel.

The bow of the boat pounds through the waves, up and down the stern drags through the water. The ride is much smoother. The boat rocks from side to side. The higher you are the more movement you encounter.
