Motion Facts and Information

  1. What causes Motion Sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Age, Children suffer more from motion sickness than adults and usually adults over 50 rarely suffer from motion sickness

  2. Motion sickness or sea sickness is usually just a minor annoyance and does not signify any serious medical illness, but some travelers are incapacitated by it, and a few even suffer symptoms for a few days after the trip.

  3. Techniques to reduce motion sickness, seasickness, and altitude sickness: Position yourself for the least movement, The lesser the movement while traveling the better, this means asking the driver to slow down while in either a car or bus, sitting near the middle of an airplane or boat. Try and watch the horizon when you are on a boat and get plenty of fresh air even if itís very cold. When in a car try and sit in the front seat looking straight ahead, if you are old enough, drive the car.

  4. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Eat bland foods -- crackers and bread, or bananas rice, applesauce and toast.

  5. What Can I Do for Motion Sickness: Do not read while traveling if you are subject to motion sickness, and do not sit in a seat facing backward.

  6. Motion sickness drugs, available over the counter or by prescription, can cause unpleasant and sometimes serious side effects. Many of these drugs may not be suitable for children or, in certain circumstances, even for adults.

  7. The movement of a boat on a fluid sea creates stress in the portions of the brain responsible for balance. Perhaps that stress causes the brain to start malfunctioning as the land based environment it understands is suddenly not behaving, as it should.

  8. Motion sickness, seasickness and altitude sickness happen when signals from the balance system of your body conflict with visual cues. For example, your body may sense rolling motions that you cannot see from inside a ship's cabin. Conversely, during a "virtual reality" simulation, your eyes perceive movement that your body does not experience. In addition, the structures of your inner ears can become unbalanced.

  9. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: On the airplane: ask for a window seat. The front of the plane may be preferable, as it is usually less noisy.

  10. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Do not skip eating before diving. An empty stomach can be almost as bad as one with the wrong types of food in it. Give your stomach acids something to work on other than your well-being. Give your stomach time to begin digesting you meal. Get up a little earlier if you must to eat relaxed and an hour or more before going out on the water.† Don't overeat and get bloated either.† Easy does it.
