Motion Facts and Information

  1. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; take slow, deep breaths

  2. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Have some water and fruit before and between dives. It can help by re-hydrating you.

Different textbooks have different definitions, but basically motion sickness -- also called air sickness, sea sickness or car sickness -- is nausea and vomiting triggered by disturbance of the vestibular apparatus. The vestibular apparatus refers to the semicircular canals of the inner ear, which we use to maintain balance and sense orientation and movement.

  4. To relieve motion sickness or sea sickness, avoid alcoholic beverages at least 24 hours before travel.

  5. What Can I Do for Motion Sickness: Do not watch or talk to another traveler who is having motion sickness.

  7. Acupressure wrist bands put pressure on the point called P6. Many people claim it works. It may in some individuals. How it works is unknown; however the Chinese state it works by balancing the ying and yang of your body.

  8. What Can I Do for Motion Sickness: Take one of the varieties of motion sickness medicines before your travel begins, as recommended by your physician.

  9. Motion sickness is a conflict between your senses. A fluid filled canal in your inner ear that controls your sense of balance tells your brain that your body is moving, while your eyes, looking into the cabin of the boat, tells your brain that you are not moving. That conflict can cause your body to be out of balance, and we know how the digestive system feels about that.

  10. For motion sickness or sea sickness: If you are beginning to feel a bit queasy, stand up and look out over the horizon. Despite what you might think, sitting or lying down is the worst thing you can do at this point. Don't do it. This is a critical moment. You will get much worse even faster and may reach a point of no return if you make the wrong choice. Soda crackers seem to help some people by calming their stomachs and reducing nausea.
