Motion Facts and Information

  1. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Avoid gasoline or diesel fumes. They can put you over the edge literally and figuratively. Stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible. Avoid becoming overheated and dehydrated.

  2. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Make sure you and your buddy have your gear prepared so that you can be ready to dive in as little time as possible once the boat anchors. When the boat is rolling with the waves rather than moving under its own power and you are standing on deck, possibly getting hot, especially if wearing a wet or dry suit, your resistance to motion sickness diminishes rapidly. Reduce that exposure time to an absolute minimum.

  3. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Face leeward (so if you vomit, it gets blown away from the ship, not into it).

  5. The movement of a boat on a fluid sea creates stress in the portions of the brain responsible for balance. Perhaps that stress causes the brain to start malfunctioning as the land based environment it understands is suddenly not behaving, as it should.

  6. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Aboard a ship: stay toward the middle and look at the horizon. Avoid ship travel if possible. Stay out of small tight places where you can't see the horizon.

  8. Motion sickness or sea sickness is usually just a minor annoyance and does not signify any serious medical illness, but some travelers are incapacitated by it, and a few even suffer symptoms for a few days after the trip.

  9. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; apply cold packs or ice to the eyes & neck

  10. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Drink plenty of water. Even partial dehydration lowers your body's resistance to the stressful factors caused by diving and the boat ride. Take lots of water with you and drink often.
