Motion Facts and Information

  1. Techniques to reduce motion sickness, seasickness, and altitude sickness: Don't read while traveling, Reading increases the conflict between what the eye sees and what the boat feels which is the cause of motion sickness. So if you suffer from motion sickness do not read while traveling.

  2. Motion sickness, seasickness and altitude sickness happen when signals from the balance system of your body conflict with visual cues. For example, your body may sense rolling motions that you cannot see from inside a ship's cabin. Conversely, during a "virtual reality" simulation, your eyes perceive movement that your body does not experience. In addition, the structures of your inner ears can become unbalanced.

  3. Some people experience nausea and even vomiting when riding in an airplane, automobile, or amusement park ride, and this is called motion sickness. Many people experience motion sickness when riding on a boat or ship, and this is called sea sickness even though it is the same disorder.

  4. Different textbooks have different definitions, but basically motion sickness -- also called air sickness, sea sickness or car sickness -- is nausea and vomiting triggered by disturbance of the vestibular apparatus. The vestibular apparatus refers to the semicircular canals of the inner ear, which we use to maintain balance and sense orientation and movement.

  5. There are various prescription and nonprescription drugs available for motion sickness. Some drugs prevent motion sickness and some treat it. You will need to find the one that works best for you.

  6. Motion sickness causes reduced blood flow and this in turn reduces the body temperature making the sufferer feel cold and clammy.

  7. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Eat bland foods -- crackers and bread, or bananas rice, applesauce and toast.

  8. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Get plenty of rest before diving. Weariness and exhaustion can make you more susceptible to other things that can bring on motion sickness. Do your gear preparation early the day before diving and take care of other business well before a proper bed time.

  9. Symptoms of motion sickness, seasickness or altitude sickness: Vomiting, this mechanism is usually for getting rid of bad food from the stomach, but in the case of motion sickness there is usually no bad food in the stomach, therefore after vomiting there is not the usual relief and the suffer still feels sick and miserable.

  10. Acupressure wrist bands put pressure on the point called P6. Many people claim it works. It may in some individuals. How it works is unknown; however the Chinese state it works by balancing the ying and yang of your body.
