Motion Facts and Information

  1. Seasickness happens when the body, inner ear, and eyes all send different signals to the brain, resulting in confusion and queasiness. It is a problem generally attributed to disturbance in the balance system of the inner ear (vestibular) system. Your sensory perception gets out of synch as these nerve fibers attempt to compensate for the unfamiliar motion of the ship moving through water.

  2. Techniques to reduce motion sickness, seasickness, and altitude sickness: The Night before the trip, Lack of sleep, hangovers and upset stomachs are wrong way to start a trip and to avoid motion sickness. Therefore careful eating the 24 hours before the trip is wise and will help to reduce the chance of motion sickness. Therefore avoid a heavy and or fatty meal, one with lots of spices, chicken and fish or anything that is old or a little suspect, like takeaway foods late at night.

  3. Pilots often report that their family members and other passengers are far more prone to motion sickness than they are.

  4. It is not known why some people develop motion sickness, seasickness or altitude sickness and others do not. Motion sickness is more likely to be seen in young people, women, and people of Asian ancestry. Those who are fearful and anxious during a trip, or who more frequently experience nausea or vomiting, may also be prone to motion sickness.

  5. In a large study done in India, the prevalence of motion sickness was about 28%, and females were more susceptible (27%) were more susceptible than males (16.8%. Individuals with more active occupations are less susceptible in medical transport personnel, 46% of personnel reported nausea.

  6. Symptoms of motion sickness, seasickness or altitude sickness: Feeling Giddy and Faint

  7. Motion sickness produces a whole range of symptoms, of which nausea and vomiting are the most severe.

  8. Some things to remember for sea sickness - Fresh air is good but you want to stay low and to the stern of the boat. That is where you will encounter the least motion. The bow of the boat pounds through the waves, up and down the stern drags through the water. The ride is much smoother. The boat rocks from side to side. The higher you are the more movement you encounter.

  9. One tablet of trip ease should be taken at the start of each trip, and one every hour while the problem persists.

  10. Beer for motion sickness or sea sickness: Beer initially may keep you well hydrated and also has a sedating effect (not many people have nausea or vomiting while asleep). But the bad effect is that it may eventually cause dehydration. Remember drinking beer may eventually make you pee like a racehorse.
